Becoming a celebrity wig stylist

5 Tips To Become a Celebrity Wig Stylist

Being a wig stylist creating commissions for TV and VIP events is no easy task. The pressure to create flawless looks for high-profile clients is immense. To help you navigate this challenging but rewarding career, here are some expert tips from Ben to take your wig styling game to the next level.

1. Understand Your Client's Vision

Before taking on any commission, it is crucial to have a thorough understanding of your client's needs, expectations and preferences. Take time to discuss the look they want to achieve and how they want to feel wearing the hair. Helping to choose great shades is vital, I use the HYH colour page so my client can enjoy exploring and I can point them to my suggestions. If the clients design doesn't align with who I am as a stylist in regards to my ability or taste, I try to recommend a stylist that I know will be more suited for the project. This will ensure that you deliver results that exceed expectations and never take on commissions that may fall short.

2. Invest in Quality Wigs

Quality is key when it comes to wig styling. Invest in high-quality wigs made from premium materials that look and feel great. These wigs will not only be more durable and last longer but will also provide a more realistic finish, enhancing your client's overall look. Your client is investing in you and will appreciate your investment in quality for them. Choosing good quality tools and supplies is a reflection of your professionalism and commitment to producing beautiful work.

3. Set Your Own Curl Patterns and Textures

I steam set all my wigs in rollers, plaits or curling rods. It truly elevates the finish and I achieve beautiful movement which is important if the client is performing or even walking! I have worked on manufacturer curl patterns in the past, I noticed they can be inconsistent and sections tend to clump together. I now steam set every wig I produce on commission because it truly elevates the wig and viewers always compliment the movement of my wigs in person and on screen.

4. Customise Wigs With Your Own Cut

Every client is unique, and their wig should reflect their individuality. I cut each wig to suit the client's face shape and personal preferences. Teasing up wigs that have been pre-cut by manufacturers often limits your options. I also found they almost always disconnect the layers which are hard to correct and make the wigs difficult to work with. The way you add texture and shape with each cut will set you apart as a top-tier wig stylist.

5. Understand Your Value and Charge a Fair Price

It's important that you understand your value and price your work fairly. Styling for close friends at a temporarily agreed lower price to practice is fair and I did that to gain experience and feedback. Once you are confident in your ability and ready to become self employed, that is the only time I would consider creating a business portfolio and start offering your work to clients outside of your circle. Jumping in too fast will quickly become stressful and putting out imperfect quality will damage your reputation. Not charging enough or undercutting in the industry is very unfair to other stylists and you may fail to cover your costs or meet legal responsibility such as paying taxes. Another option to begin a styling career is seek employment as an assistant stylist with a mentor who can support and assist you with your development.

By following these tips, you'll be creating stunning looks that will turn heads on the pink carpet and runways. Remember, attention to detail, creativity, and a passion for your craft are the keys to success in the world of wig styling. Please be sure to check out Bens work @benjaminpaulhair
